Exif data: What is it? How can I remove it?

Exif data is metadata stored in files that use the JPEG, TIFF and RIFF WAV format.

Exif data is placed in the header of a file and contains:
  • Date and Time
  • Copyright information
  • Camera settings
  • Thumbnails for preview
  • Geolocation (On many cameras and phones since 2014)

Privacy Issue

Using exif data it's possible to determine where, when and using what device a picture has been taken (If the Geolocation is included).

How do I remove Exif data from my file?

There are many tools available.
